BOTOX® Cosmetic has become well known for removing the typical frown lines between eyebrows. It is further in use for the horizontal forehead lines, the crow’s feet, bunny lines, jelly rolls, and to decrease the size of the masseter muscles. In a recent study published by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, more benefits from BOTOX® Cosmetic were reported. Dr. Bonaparte and David Ellis reported on their performance study to understand the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinum toxin A) on the skin of women. These women were treated for the typical indication of softening the wrinkles around the forehead, glabella and crow’s feet.
It was shown that BOTOX® Cosmetic not only paralyzes the muscles creating the wrinkles but actually improves the pliability and elasticity of the skin. These two changes make skin look and feel more youthful. The mechanism of the skin change is unknown, but BOTOX® Cosmetic is having a skin tightening effect. However, these results are temporary, only lasting as long as the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic, which is usually between three to four months.
The study is very exciting, as BOTOX® Cosmetic appears to reverse the effects of aging and ultraviolet exposure, thus repairing and reversing skin damage. It even makes the addition of BOTOX® Cosmetic to maintenance creams and serums an exciting possibility.
