Are you one of the 1.3 million people in the U.S. who suffer from hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, is an often embarrassing condition that can cause you to feel self-conscious in professional, personal, and social settings. While there are several ways to address excessive sweating, many are painful, invasive, or ineffective. That’s why Dr. Frank Agullo is excited to offer his patients at Southwest Plastic Surgery the latest innovation in medical sweat control: the Brella™ SweatControl Patch™.
Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ is an adhesive sodium patch that is applied to your underarms for up to three minutes. It uses targeted alkali thermolysis (TAT) to reduce sweat. The science behind TAT is that when pure metallic sodium reacts with the water in sweat, it generates thermal energy. Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ specifically targets the sweat glands in your underarms, causing a thermal micro injury to those sweat glands and temporarily inactivating them.
Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ is designed to treat adults with primary focal hyperhidrosis. Primary focal hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating in specific areas of your body, including your hands, feet, and underarms. It is caused by a genetic mutation and is often passed down through your family. It is its own condition and is not caused by underlying medical issues or outside sources like medications. Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ is FDA cleared to treat primary axillary hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating of the underarms.
Candidates for Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ are adults over 18 in overall good health and who have suffered from one or more of the following issues:
Patients whose sweating is related to a medical condition or medication are not candidates for Brella™ SweatControl Patch™. Additionally, anyone with active skin irritation in their underarms must wait to be treated until it clears up.
When you come in for your Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ treatment, the adhesive patch is applied to your clean and dry underarm. Your provider will gently massage the patch for up to three minutes, during which time you may feel a sensation of warmth, tingling, or pins and needles. These are typically indications that the treatment is working.
Once the treatment is complete, the patch is removed and discarded, and your underarm is wiped clean. A new patch is placed on the other underarm, and the process is repeated. The entire treatment takes no longer than 20 minutes, after which you’re free to go about your day with no restrictions.
You will begin to see the results of your Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ medical sweat treatment within three to five days. It is proven to reduce sweating for up to four months, though some patients report that it lasts longer.
Several other treatments are available for treating excessive armpit sweat; however, they are typically more invasive or less effective than Brella™ SweatControl Patch™. Prescription antiperspirants may cause skin and eye irritation, while prescription wipes and creams may cause dry mouth. Prescription medications used for excessive sweating often come with unpleasant side effects. BOTOX® Cosmetic can temporarily block the nerves that activate your sweat glands, but the injections can be uncomfortable. In extreme cases, patients opt for sweat gland removal, a more invasive solution than any other option.
Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ is a non-invasive, highly effective treatment for excessive sweating that doesn’t use needles, doesn’t require downtime, and is designed to be safe for all skin types. Side effects are typically minimal—in fact, almost 80% of trial participants reported zero side effects—and resolve within a few days.
Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ typically costs around $400 per treatment. Dr. Agullo will provide you with an accurate cost at your consultation.
You should shave or trim your armpit hair at least 48 hours prior to your Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ treatment. Come to your appointment in loose, comfortable clothes, wearing no deodorant or antiperspirant.

No, the Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ treatment is typically not painful. Some patients report feeling warm in the treatment area, tingling, or a sensation of pins and needles, but there is usually no discomfort during your Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ session.
